Former Names of Christian Reformed Churches

The Christian Reformed denomination began in 1857 with four west Michigan congregations which seceded from the Dutch Reformed Church (now Reformed Church in America). Its first name was Hollandsche Gereformeerde Kerk (Holland Reformed Church). In 1861 it chose the name Ware Hollandsche Gereformeerde Kerk (True Holland Reformed Church). In 1880 the name was changed to Hollandsche Christelijke Gereformeerde Kerk (Holland Christian Reformed Church)

After the 1890 union with the True Dutch Reformed Church in New York and New Jersey, the denomination chose the name Christelijke Gereformeerde Kerk (Christian Reformed Church), the same name as its sister denomination in the Netherlands.

Names have often changed due to geographic renaming, church relocation, merger, or growing weary with an old name (often a number, like Second church) and choosing a more meaningful name. Obvious changes (e.g., Calgary to Calgary, First) have not been listed.
