PortfolioDan KnightI've been doing design work since my first yearbook stint in junior high. Before starting at Baker Book House, design projects included:
My first design work using computers was Worship at Church of the Servant, a 54 page booklet written primarily by Nick Wolterstorff to explain the history and rationale of worship at Church of the Servant. The booklet was designed on a Macintosh Plus using PageMaker 1.0 and Apple's new LaserWriter printer - all brand new products in 1986. During my three-and-a-half years at ComputerLand of Grand Rapids, I specialized in desktop publishing systems, especially the Macintosh with Quark XPress, a LaserWriter, and a large monitor. I worked at Baker Book House from June 1992 until January 2001, when I began working on Low End Mac full time. Back when I started at Baker, the hot computer was a Macintosh IIci with 8 MB RAM, 80 MB hard drive, and a 21" grayscale monitor. The setup was adequate for Quark, but absolutely excruciating with FrameMaker. (FrameMaker is an incredibly powerful program designed for industrial strength projects with footnotes, auto-numbered entries, automatic running heads, etc.) Although I've used both extensively, after my first two years I concentrated more and more on "Frame jobs" - mostly academic books with footnotes. This page provides links to some of my favorite book design projects.
I also do web design. Here are some of my sites. |
