The American City and the Evangelical Church, Harvie Conn. (ISBN 0-8010-2590-7)

This book has a very clean, professional design. I am especially pleased with some of the figures. Figure 3 started out as a very poor photocopy. (All figures were generated in Adobe FreeHand.)

A good figure has multiple uses. I originally created Figure 6 for When Not to Build by Bowman and Hall (see my portfolio page on that book). Harvie Conn provided a copy of that page as an example of what he wanted in his book. I like that! This chart clearly demonstrates that the United States has changed from a rural society (dark gray) to an urban one (light gray).

Firgure 12 was tedious. Using a clip art package that showed every county in the US, I first moved the counties to a separate layer in FreeHand. Based on census data, each county with over 100 people per square mile was shaded gray. Then all the other counties were deleted. I did a more detailed version with several levels of gray, but it really didn't work as well as this one.
